If price is a consideration in choosing a data recovery company, beware of low quotes before the company has provided an evaluation of your drive and a full list of recoverable files.

Cheap Marketing Tricks of Data Recovery Companies - BC

The Crazy Low Price Trick

It is well-established that clients will be attracted to the idea of lower prices. However, it pays to be on the lookout for the following tricks:

  1. A company may be offering services under many different names, none of which are indicative of the true name of the company. This indicates that the company is running from its own (probably well-earned) reputation.
  2. A low price may be advertised, but it applies only to the simplest of data recovery scenarios (which you could solve using $80 software). More complicated scenarios will be much much more expensive.
  3. A low price may be quoted, but the dodgy company requires that the most important files be listed, and provides only a part of the data in exchange for its fees. To recover any other files, the company requires that the client pay the fee again. This process is repeated ad nauseum until the client has paid much more than he or she expected.

Transparen caters to sophisticated data recovery clients who see beyond such tricks and wish to do business with a company that is straight and upfront about what can be delivered and for what price, once it has fully evaluated the data recovery job.

The "We Can Do It In One Day", For A Crazy Low Price Trick

Usually, this is just plain not true. Fast service will cost much more than a crazy low price. A company which makes timeline commitments before making a full evaluation is just begging for a chance to disappoint its client. Usually nobody wins, because the drive will have avoided the chance to go to a competent data recovery shop that would have completed the recovery, and is instead given to a company that does not yet have the logistical know-how to realize that it cannot provide general-case same-day service.

Sure, sometimes data recovery can be done in a day, but to say so before having seen the drive and all of its problems... is unrealistic. To claim to be willing to do backflips for the client, to stay up all night doing recoveries, for a crazy low price... would be, well, crazy.
